UFC 143 Fight of the Night (FOTN)

The Fight of the Night (FOTN) will most likely be Condit vs. Diaz in the main event and most bettors will be on this fight. The 5-round fight has all the makings for a war between two excellent strikers and I could see this fight winning FOTN. If this fight doesn’t win the FOTN bonus the other options would be Werdum vs. Nelson or Jorgensen vs. Barao.

UFC 143 Knockout of the Night (KOTN)

The KO of the Night (KOTN) bonus could go to a lot of fighters this weekend as well. Condit and Diaz both have 13 TKO/KO wins in their career and will both be looking for blood against each other. I think the Nelson and Werdum fight could end in a knockout although it may also go the distance. Koscheck and Pierce I doubt will win the KOTN bonus, but they could if noone else wins by TKO/KO.

UFC 143 Submission of the Night (SOTN)

There are tons of options for Submission of the Night (SOTN) this weekend at UFC 143 and you’ll need to narrow down your picks to 2-3 fighters. Condit and Diaz are two fighters who have lots of submissions and could submit each other. Barao could win the SOTN bonus and I like him to win the bonus this weekend. Herman just submitted Noke in his last fight and could submit Starks this weekend, but I wouldn’t put too much on Herman.

Condit has built up a reputation for finishing his fights. Condit has 13 TKO/KO wins plus 13 submission wins in 27 career victories, so he definitely knows how to finish his opponents. Diaz is also a finisher and has 13 TKO/KO wins plus 8 submissions in his career plus in my opinion Diaz has fought tougher overall competition. In the stand-up game I think Diaz has the edge. Diaz is a technical boxer that just continues to punch until you’re knocked out.

Condit has excellent power, which is evident by his 13 knockout wins, but he’s going to find it hard to keep up with Diaz in a long 5 round fight. Diaz is a cardio beast and will be able to stay on the gas pedal for the entire fight if he has to and I don’t think Condit will be able to last that long. On the ground it should be a closer fight. Diaz is excellent at BJJ while Condit will have an edge with his wrestling.

I don’t think either fighter will want to spend much time on the ground because neither fighter excels on the ground. Diaz and Condit are going to want to knock each other out and I think Diaz will get the job done. He has a lot to prove in this fight and if he loses to Condit it’ll be a big setback in his relentless journey to the top of the welterweight division. This one has Fight of the Night written all over it.

Werdum left the UFC in 2008 to fight with Strikeforce and he tore up the competition in his 1st three fights. Werdum was able to pick up big wins over Mike Kyle, Antonio Silva and more importantly Fedor. Werdum did lose his last fight in Strikeforce against Overeem by decision and will now be fighting in his 1st fight since coming back over from Strikeforce. The fact that Werdum was able to go the distance against Overeem is pretty good and I couldn’t see Nelson being able to do that.

Nelson and Werdum have only been knocked out once in their careers and neither fighter has been submitted. I think this fight will go the distance and that might be the safest bet this weekend in this fight. Betting over 2.5 rounds looks to be solid, as I don’t think either fighter will be able to finish the fight. Werdum recently stated in an interview in Brazil that he wants to try and KO Nelson this weekend, but that’s easier said than done.

Both of these guys are good on the ground, so I think we’ll see a fight that stays standing up most of the time. Werdum wants to finish the fight on his feet and I’m sure Nelson is willing to bang. Nelson is fresh off knocking out Cro Cop and will have a lot of confidence coming into this fight. I still think Werdum is the better fighter overall and more technical, which will be important when these two sluggers meet in the cage this weekend.

Pierce gave everything he had against Fitch and Hendricks, but the two wrestlers proved to be too much for him. Koscheck is also a great wrestler and could pose problems for Pierce just like Fitch and Hendricks. Koscheck is also better on his feet and has the edge in the striking department. Koscheck has worked on his stand-up a lot since joining the UFC and he now has KO power plus the ability to land his punches consistently.

Mike is a great wrestler, but he doesn’t have a great stand-up game. He does have power behind his punches, but he’s much slower than Koscheck and I don’t think poses a big threat. Koscheck should try and keep the fight standing as long as he can while scoring points in the stand-up game. Koscheck has the wrestling ability to stop Pierce from taking him down at will and I think Pierce may find that he can’t work his game plan, which is to wrestle with his opponents.

Koscheck needs to win this fight to keep him in contention in the division. Pierce also needs the win, but beating Koscheck isn’t an easy thing to do when you don’t have a ton of experience. Koscheck has fought the best in the division and while Pierce has a couple big fights in his career he lost both of those fights and I think that will happen again this weekend at UFC 143, this is a good canditate for KO of the Night.

Barao is listed as a fairly heavy favourite at the moment and the odds are likely to go up as the week goes on. Barao is a big name in the UFC compared to Jorgensen due to the hype that Barao has received and the public will be betting him. I think Barao is going to win this fight, but it’s definitely going to be a tough battle from start to finish. One thing that really worries me is the fact that Scott can knockout Renan with one punch anytime during the fight.

Barao could also finish this fight with a knockout, as he has done 6 times before. Both fighters also have plenty of submission wins under their belts including 4 for Jorgensen and 13 for Barao. I think Jorgensen is going to have a hard time trying to wrestle Barao due to the fact that Barao is so quick and can move around in the cage as good as anyone in the division. I have a feeling that this fight will stay standing up most of the time unless either fighter feels like they’re being dominated in the stand-up game.

I’ll be betting on Barao, but this is going to be a great fight. Jorgensen is no slouch and was at one point a contender for the belt before losing to Dominic Cruz in his last WEC fight. Both fighters are working towards a title shot and both know that they can’t lose this fight if they want a title fight in the near future, also this fight has a good shout of picking up one of the prop betting prizes.

Herman debated about retiring from the UFC after his two knee injuries, but he bounced back in 2011 after almost a 2-year layoff and picked up victories over Tim Credeur (TKO) and Kyle Noke (Submission). I don’t think Herman will take this fight lightly now that it’s on the main card, as I’m sure he wants to start moving up the ladder in the middleweight division. This is a huge chance for Starks to show fans that he can do more than just wrestle as well.

Ed is the more experienced fighter by a long shot and his skill set is much more refined. Starks is a great wrestler, but that’s about it and that means Herman will have the edge in many departments. Herman has struggled against wrestlers in past fights, but Starks doesn’t have much cage experience. Herman will also be able to cause tons of problems on the ground for Starks, as Herman is one of the best at submitting his opponent on his back.

Herman should win this fight, but the bookmakers have the odds way too high. If I’m betting on a -300 or so favourite I want to make sure the fight is as close to a lock as possible. I don’t think this fight is a lock for Herman by any means and therefore I’m going to layoff this fight at UFC 143. I think there is some value betting on Starks as a huge underdog, but I think there is also better fights on the main card this weekend to make some money on.
