Types of MMA Bets

Over the past several years MMA has grown in popularity by a huge percentage and there are now televised events on a monthly basis that you can wager on. If you think you have what it takes to bet on the MMA you’re going to need to spend a bit of time learning what type of bets you can make. In this article we’re going to walk you through the various types of bets you can make on mixed martial arts.

Straight Wager / Moneyline Bet

A moneyline bet is when you bet on a single fighter to win a match by any means necessary. It doesn’t matter if the fighter wins in the first round by TKO or by split decision. The odds on a moneyline bet are really easy to understand and if you’ve ever bet on sports like baseball or hockey then you’ll already know how to read MMA moneyline bets.

  • Anderson Silva –250 vs. Rich Franklin +300

The favourite in a moneyline wager is always listed with a (-) sign in front of the odds while the underdog will have the (+) sign in front of their odds. In the example above you’d need to bet $250 to win $100 if you think Silva will win and you’d need end up winning $300 on a $100 bet if you decided to bet on Franklin.

Parlay

A parlay is when you bet on two or more different fighters to win on the same ticket. In order to win on a parlay you need to win every fight that you’ve picked. You can also add over/under bets and prop bets on parlays with some of the online sportbooks if you want to mix them up. The main benefit of parlays is that you can really lower the amount of juice you’re paying on a bet by picking several fighters to win on the same ticket rather then separately.

Over/Under Bets

In the MMA when you bet on an over/under bet you’re simply deciding on how long a fight is going to last. For instance, you might see a fight with an over/under of 2.5, which means that the sportsbook thinks the fight will last about 2-3 rounds. It’s your job to decide whether you think the fight will go 3+ rounds or less then 2 rounds. If you think the fight will go 4 rounds then you would bet on the over 2.5. The odds for over/under bets will be displayed the same way that moneyline bets are.

Prop Bets

Most online sportbooks offer prop bets on televised fights, but many of the other fights won’t have any prop bets. There are a few different types of prop bets that you’ll be able to bet on at one point in time or another if you’d like. Below is the most common type of prop bets that you’ll be able to bet on.

  • Will the fighter win by total knockout or submission
  • Will the fight go the distance or not go the distance
  • Will the fighter win in X round (You can pick exactly what round you think the fighter will win in)
